Earlier this month, GMAP’s Programme Manager and Junior Programme Officer visited Somaliland to conduct a Gender and Diversity Assessment of The HALO Trust’s Mine Action Programme
They visited a minefield in the western region of Awdal, where a section of female deminers is currently deployed.
The work of these female deminers enables them to travel in Somaliland and, as a result, they get to know more people. “We make more connections, here in the camps, and outside in the communities we work in”. Above all they said, it is their hard work and patience that make them good at their jobs. Not only are these women the main financial providers for their families, they also improve the lives of hundreds of other families through their work to make Somaliland a safer place.
